Victor Osimhen, the third‑best goal‑scorer in Serie A, set a new personal benchmark in Napoli’s 2‑0 victory over Sassuolo on Saturday, Sports Extra reports. In his 197th appearance for club and country, the Nigerian striker netted his 100th career goal in the 33rd minute, doubling Napoli’s lead after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s brilliant solo effort had put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute. Osimhen held off two defenders before surprising goalkeeper Andrea Consigli with a ferocious shot from a tight angle. He also missed a one‑on‑one chance early in the second half, while Andrea Pinamonti’s header went agonisingly wide.

The win at Mapei Stadium marked Napoli’s seventh consecutive Serie A triumph since a 1‑0 loss to Inter after the World Cup break, extending the Partenopei’s lead at the top of the table to 18 points. That defeat to Inter proved a mere blip, and Napoli’s response has been astonishing. Inter can narrow the gap on Saturday, but a loss to Udinese would preserve Napoli’s 18‑point advantage for another week.

Osimhen’s achievement surpasses the records of Lionel Messi, Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi reached 100 goals after 210 appearances, Drogba after 236, Ibrahimović after 245 and Ronaldo after 301. Osimhen’s strike was his 18th Serie A goal of the season in 19 games, and it made him the first Napoli player to score in seven consecutive Serie A matches. Substituted in the 83rd minute for Giovanni Simeone, he now holds the third‑best minutes‑per‑goal ratio in Serie A since the 1994/95 season, scoring once every 124 minutes, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo (104 minutes) and Brazilian Ronaldo (117 minutes).

Since the start of 2023, Osimhen has contributed to more goals (10 – nine goals and one assist) than Kvaratskhelia (eight – four goals and four assists) in Europe’s top five leagues. Napoli’s upcoming schedule includes a Champions League last‑16 first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on Tuesday, followed by a Serie A match against Empoli four days later.
