Munich attack suspect had ‘Islamist motivation,’ prosecutor says

A suspect who intentionally drove into a crowd of demonstrators in Munich has admitted to the act, and authorities believe he was motivated by Islamist ideology, a prosecutor revealed on Friday.

Gabriele Tilmann, the lead prosecutor on the case, confirmed during a news conference that the suspect, an Afghan national, had acknowledged his actions.

“He has admitted that he deliberately drove into the participants of the demonstration,” Tilmann stated.

While urging caution against premature conclusions, she added, “I’m very cautious about making hasty judgements, but based on everything we know at the moment, I would venture to speak of an Islamist motivation for the crime.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the suspect’s background, potential ties to extremist networks, or whether he acted alone.

Officials are continuing to examine his online activity, communications, and possible affiliations to determine the extent of his ideological influences.
