The Zamfara Police Command has arrested a suspected female gunrunner for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to bandits. The command also recovered 325 live rounds for AK‑47 rifles from her. In a separate operation, police arrested other suspects for possessing 1,000 registered MTN SIM packs.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, disclosed these details in a statement issued in Gusau. He said the suspected gunrunner, Fatima Sani, 35, was apprehended on 13 February after an intelligence report linked her to the supply of weapons to bandits in the state from Lafia, Nasarawa State. “Police detectives arrested the suspect in possession of 325 rounds of live ammunition,” Shehu said. “The arrest followed intelligence that she had moved the exhibit from Lafia to a notorious bandit kingpin operating in the Zamfara forest.” During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being involved in the business and admitted she had previously supplied three AK‑47 rifles and 1,000 rounds of AK‑47 ammunition to bandits in the state. Shehu added that the woman, a native of Kaura‑Namoda town in Zamfara, will soon be arraigned in court.
On 15 February, police received another intelligence report indicating that a suspect was seen with an uncountable number of registered MTN SIM cards. Operatives acted swiftly, arrested the individual, and conducted an on‑the‑spot search, recovering 1,000 SIM cards. The suspect confessed that the cards were intended for sale to customers.
According to the spokesperson, on 12 February the command, through its community policing engagement, acted on intelligence that led to the arrest of suspected kidnappers. These individuals were believed to have been terrorising parts of Kaduna, Kano, and neighboring states for a long time. Investigations revealed that the suspects specialized in kidnapping, abducting an unspecified number of people and demanding millions of naira in ransom. One member of the syndicate, Thomas Ya’u, confessed to masterminding the kidnapping of his biological mother and three other victims.
