The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Syrus Hassan, disclosed that about 300 of its members have not received salaries for several months. He made the statement during a “One Day Conference – Dignity of a Teacher 2023,” organized by Uncle Focus Educational Consult and General Contract Ltd. on Friday in Kaduna.
Hassan lamented that teachers continue to lag behind in welfare, noting that many have been denied benefits and incentives such as leave grants for months. While the government has emphasized the importance of improving teachers’ knowledge through workshops, he stressed that timely payment of wages remains essential. “The conference was educative and will add value, dignity and respect to teachers who attended,” he said, adding that it aimed to update teachers on modern techniques.
He further explained that bureaucratic bottlenecks and lengthy procedures have delayed salary payments. “Unpaid teachers number around 300,” Hassan said, urging the government to settle the arrears. Some veteran teachers face certification issues; although approvals have been granted, they still have not been paid. Non‑teaching staff—including security workers, nannies, and other regular employees—have also gone unpaid for almost two years.
