Group alerts NOSDRA, SHELL of oil spill in Obololi community in Bayelsa

Environmental Defenders Network, EDEN has called the attention of the National Oil Spill Detection and Remediation Agency and Shell Petroleum to a crude oil spill from a pipeline along Obololi creek in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The current oil spill reportedly occurred Sundayn night, being the 16th of February 2025.

A statement by Eden’s Media and Communications Manager, Elvira Jordan, said this is the very first spill happening on the community’s river or creek.

She noted that the water body is the community’s only source for drinking and everything else.

The statement read: ”Obololi community is where pipelines belonging to Oando and Shell traversed.

”The community folks claimed Shell laid the pipelines in 1973 and has not replaced them since then.

”The people urgently need drinking water. Shell should immediately mobilize for JIV and follow up with cleanup, remediation and compensation, the group said.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the leadership of the Southern Ijaw Local Government and the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Environment will be visiting the impacted area for assessment.
