Arsenal’s title race over – Merson reacts to West Ham’s 1-0 win

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has claimed that the team can no longer win the Premier League title this season.

Merson was speaking on Sky Sports after the Gunners suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen headed in the only goal of the game in the 44th minute at the Emirates.

The defeat means Liverpool remain eight points clear of Arsenal, with both teams having played the same number of matches.

The Reds can extend their lead tomorrow against Manchester City.

Merson said: “[The title race is over] one million per cent. Arsenal cannot catch Liverpool. They’ve got no forward. They’ve got a young 17-year-old in Nwaneri, who has a bright future, but he struggled today.

“Trossard is a bit-part player, in my opinion. There’s absolutely no chance Arsenal can win the league. Even if Liverpool get beaten 7-0 by Man City, Arsenal cannot win it.

“I’ve seen enough today to know they are going to struggle until the end of the season. They’ve got 12 games left and will do well to win half of those.

“Suddenly, the PSV game in the Champions League is a coin toss. They’ve got nothing upfront. They are toothless.”
