Manchester City survived a shock elimination for the second round running as they beat second-tier strugglers Plymouth Argyle 3-1 at the Etihad.

Nico O’Reilly scored twice, before Kevin De Bruyne sealed the win in the second half.

Bournemouth reached the quarter-finals for only the third time as they knocked out Wolverhampton Wanderers via a penalty shoot-out. The game had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Preston North-End also defeated Burnley 3-0.
