The management of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM) also known as Uni-Agric has ordered the closure of the institution, eight days after the abduction of three female students who remain in captivity.
The decision comes amid growing tension over the students’ continued detention, with no initial demands from their abductors. However, reports indicate that the kidnappers have now demanded a ransom of N40 million for their release.
In a statement, JOSTUM’s Registrar, Dr. John David, announced that the Committee of Deans and Directors, in a meeting held on Friday, February 28, 2025, approved a temporary vacation for all students, instructing them to leave the campus and hostels until further notice.
“This decision will remain in effect until the three abducted female students are safely returned and adequate security measures are in place to ensure the safety of lives and property on campus,” Dr. David stated.
The university urged students and staff to remain calm and hopeful as security agencies continue efforts to secure the students’ release.
JOSTUM had initially declared a one-week closure following the abduction.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson Catherine Anene has yet to comment on the situation.
