CAN President joins Muslims at Ramadan iftar in Abuja, advocates religious unity

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, has emphasized the need for religious harmony as he joined Muslim faithful for an iftar (breaking of fast) on Thursday in Abuja.

Okoh participated in the event at the Al-Habibiyya Mosque, where about 2,300 fasting Muslims were provided with meals. He praised the initiative, noting that such interfaith engagements foster religious tolerance and unity in Nigeria.

“We, Muslims and Christians, are essentially the same, and we must work together for the progress of this country,” Okoh said.

Addressing those questioning his presence at a mosque, he added, “I have come here today, and I will come again. This is a moment for learning and sharing. I encourage every Nigerian to embrace understanding and mutual respect across religious lines.”

Earlier, the National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyya Mosque, Sheikh Fuad Adeyemi, explained that the annual Ramadan feeding program aims to assist the less privileged, regardless of their faith.

He noted that inviting religious leaders and dignitaries from diverse backgrounds was part of efforts to strengthen peace and coexistence in Nigeria.

“We must recognize our shared humanity and the fact that we live together in the same society. Our small contributions, by God’s grace, will continue to make a difference,” Adeyemi stated.

The event brought together Islamic and Christian clerics, CAN representatives, faith-based organizations, and traditional rulers, all reinforcing the message of unity and peaceful coexistence.
