A suspected cultist, Fatai Abass, who had been on the Osun Police Command’s watchlist for over a year, was arrested on Saturday evening in the Oke Baale area of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State. Operatives of the command’s Anti‑Cultism Squad acted on a tip‑off and detained the 23‑year‑old.

Abass, also known as “Gbefawo,” has been linked to several deadly clashes among rival cult groups in Osun. At various times, he allegedly attacked people in multiple locations within the Osogbo metropolis, including Oke Baale, School Road, Oke Ayepe, Idi Omo, Ilesa Garage and Oke Ijetu. A reliable security source, who wished to remain anonymous, told our correspondent that Abass had been trailed for months without success until about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the anti‑cultism operatives finally apprehended him near Oke Baale. The source described him as a popular and feared cultist in the area. A locally made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered from him, and he reportedly confessed to multiple killings that had occurred in Osogbo.

When contacted for confirmation on Sunday, Osun Command spokesperson Yemisi Opalola verified the arrest. She affirmed that the command would not allow criminals to operate in Osun and said, “Yes, he was arrested. An investigation will continue to identify others involved in the crime.”
