Bafarawa dismisses claims of joining SDP

Former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has denied rumors circulating on social media that he has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The speculation emerged after a viral post claimed he had defected to the opposition party.

Bafarawa, who served as Sokoto governor from 1999 to 2007, had previously announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in January 2025.

In his resignation letter, he cited a desire to focus on youth empowerment through his Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI).

He also made it clear at various public events that he had retired from politics and would no longer seek or hold any political positions.

According to New Telegraph, a close associate of the former governor dismissed the defection rumors as false.

He emphasized that Bafarawa is currently out of the country and unaware of the claims.
