Youth clash: Niger Commissioner orders closure of two schools in Minna metropolis

The Niger State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has ordered the immediate closure of two schools in Minna Metropolis due to ongoing conflicts between students and local youths within the community.

The affected schools include Government Day Secondary School, Bosso Road, Minna, and Father O’Connell Science College, GSS, Minna.

In a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, the decision follows an on-site assessment by the Ministry’s management on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

“This closure will remain effective until further notice,” Dr. Mohammed stated.

The Commissioner explained that during the visit, the management observed disturbing incidents involving students and youth gangs posing as students.

“These activities have contributed to rising insecurity within the schools and surrounding communities,” she noted.

Dr. Mohammed urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and proactive, as the state is implementing decisive measures.

She also thanked parents and members of the public for their understanding and cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of the students.
