The Afenifere National Youth Council has pledged its support to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the February 25 election. Speaking in Lagos on Sunday, council National President Eniola Ojajuni said the group backs Obi because of his record as governor of Anambra State and his commitment to restructuring Nigeria. Ojajuni expressed confidence that the poll will be free and fair.

“We are here to endorse the LP candidate, Obi, officially as the sole candidate for the Southwest youth wing,” Ojajuni declared. “It took us almost three months to reach a consensus among 147 youth groups in Yorubaland, and today we officially announce Obi and his running mate, Ahmed Datti, as our sole candidates for the presidential election on Saturday.” He added that before the endorsement, Obi assured the council that his first priority would be to restructure the country.

The council aims to deliver five million votes for Obi, believing that the election will be free and fair and that Southwest youths are ready to back him. Ojajuni urged Yoruba residents nationwide to vote for Obi, noting that it is time for the Southeast to produce a president. “The Yoruba have already had their turn with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and the South‑South with former President Goodluck Jonathan. Our current president, Muhammadu Buhari, is from the North. It is now the Southeast’s turn for equity and justice,” he said.
