As the race for the governorship of Kogi State begins, friends and associates of Senator Smart Adeyemi—who currently represents the Kogi West senatorial district—have urged him to contest the top position in the state. To demonstrate their commitment, the group presented a bank draft of fifty million naira to the three‑term senator to cover the cost of the nomination form, whose sale began last Friday. While handing over the draft, they pledged to mobilise sufficient support for him to secure the governorship.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) started selling nomination forms for the governorship last Friday, and ten aspirants have so far expressed interest in contesting. A statement from the senator’s media office, signed by Special Adviser Adeleye Oluwafemi and released early Monday, explained that the presentation occurred when friends and associates from across Kogi’s three senatorial districts paid a courtesy visit to Adeyemi at his Abuja residence on Sunday. The statement read in part: “Today, the 19th of February 2023, at the Maitama residence of Distinguished Senator Smart Adeyemi (CON), friends and associates of Senator Smart Adeyemi across Kogi State in Abuja called on him to run for the gubernatorial race, raised funds to purchase the governorship form and promised to galvanise support across the entire state for him.”

The group based their support for the journalist‑turned‑politician on his courage, carriage, capacity, great antecedents, experience, exposure, vision, patriotism, de‑politicised nature, oratory prowess, maturity, passion and delivery capacity. They noted with nostalgia the remarkable achievements of Senator Adeyemi across the three senatorial districts and his quality representation on the Senate floor. Fifty of the senator’s friends and associates contributed to the fund and formally donated the fifty million naira on behalf of others. The bank draft was procured on Friday, 17 February 2023, but could not be presented earlier because the senator was away on the APC presidential campaign in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In response, Adeyemi thanked the group for their unanimous decision and urged them to deliver a decisive victory for the APC in the forthcoming elections by voting massively for Bola Tinubu, Kashim Shettima and other APC candidates. He described the APC presidential candidate, Tinubu, and his running mate, Shettima, as personalities of intellectual capacity, proven track records and impeccable character, adding that they constitute the best combination to propel Nigeria to a new level of progress and prosperity.

The meeting was attended by Nathaniel Taiwo, Ben Owoleke, Ade Olamife and Akin Akinola from the Kogi West senatorial district; Omale Isaiah, Mr Dan Ameh and Mr Philip Omale from the Kogi East senatorial district; and Chief Sule Ebira and Ahmed Yinusa from the Kogi Central senatorial district, among others.
