Myanmar-Thailand earthquake: Death toll passes 1,000

Death toll from the earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand has passed 1,000.

This comes as rescuers dug through the rubble of collapsed buildings in a desperate search for survivors.

No less than 1,002 people were killed and almost 2,376 injured in Myanmar’s Mandalay region, the country’s military government said in a statement on Saturday.

Mandalay region is Myanmar’s second-largest city and close to the epicentre of the quake, Al Jazeera reports.

Recall that 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar and parts of Bangkok, Thailand on December Friday.

The earthquake was described as shallow, arising at a depth of just 10km but the damage is expected to be enormous.

The quake destroyed several buildings, bridges, roads and among others.
