Abia Govt to inspect toilets, gutters to safeguard public health

Toilets, gutters and related environmental spaces in Abia are to be inspected by sanitary personnel in the state.

This followed the recent decision of the state government to re-introduce sanitary inspectors across the state.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on environment, Professor Ijeoma Iheukwumere who stated this on Saturday while speaking to journalists after the clean up exercise, said the measure was part of the cleanliness policy of the state government aimed at ensuring sound health for Abians.

She also urged Abia residents to always clean their homes and other surroundings to avoid mosquitoes and rodent-caused ailments.

Earlier in his speech, the Permanent Secretary of Abia State Ministry of Environment, Ikechukwu Oriuwa who represented the Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, said this month’s clean up exercise recorded impressive turnout.

He however said that the ministry will next month, roll out more strict measures against defaulters.

During the exercise, Media Talk Africa gathered that 34 defaulters were arrested by the government task force and arraigned before a mobile court presided over by Onyinyechi Ibekwe, a magistrate.

Thirty of the defaulters were fined while four others were freed based on their health conditions.

Also, a man who was knocked down by a hit-and-run Sports Utility Vehicle at Eket street by Umuwaya road was rushed to the hospital for revival.
