IED planted by ISWAP explodes in Borno, injures one

An Improvised Explosive Device, IED, detonated in Meleri Village, Damboa Local Government Area, on Saturday, leaving one individual injured.

The incident was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert specialising in the Lake Chad region, via a post on his X handle.

According to Makama, intelligence sources informed him that one Alhaji Sanda, a resident of the Hansari IDP Camp, and Bulama Zarayye, aged 40, were gathering baobab tree seeds when Zarayye inadvertently stepped on an IED.

The device, believed to have been planted by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, exploded, inflicting injuries on Zarayye’s buttocks, right hand, and thigh.

Makama stated that a joint security team—including personnel from the military and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear, EOD-CBRN, unit—was swiftly deployed to the scene.

“The area was cordoned off, and a search for additional explosive devices was carried out, but no further devices were found.

“Zarayye was transported to the General Hospital in Damboa, where he is presently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition,” he added.
