Nigerian Army, police investigate Lagos explosion

The Nigerian Army’s Counter Improvised Explosive Device, CIED, Squadron, alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, Team, has launched an investigation into an explosion at a Metal Scrap Yard in Mushin, Lagos, that occurred on Friday.

Media Talk Africa recalls that the blast tragically claimed one life and left two others injured.

The explosion took place when a group of scavengers was attempting to dismantle a grenade. One of them was killed in the blast.

There have been claims circulating that the grenades involved in the explosion may have come from government law enforcement agencies.

Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed that the investigation would include verifying the origin of the grenades.

He saidtthe joint team will also look into the circumstances that led to the incident and assess the safety of the area.

In a statement, Ayeni said: “The 81 Division Nigerian Army is aware of the explosion at the Metal Scrap Yard in Mushin, Lagos State, on Friday.

“The CIED Squadron has been tasked to work with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team to determine the source and circumstances of the explosion. The team will also inspect the area to ensure ongoing safety. We urge residents to stay calm.”

“The Division extends its condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes a quick recovery to the injured.”
