Benue taskforce cracks down on hoodlums collecting illegal levies in Gboko

The Taskforce on Illegal Levies and Other Illicit Activities in Gboko Local Government Area, led by its coordinator, Hon. Moses Vangeryina, conducted a routine surveillance and enforcement operation across Gboko on Wednesday, uncovering fresh cases of extortion and unlawful activities.

During an early-morning patrol, the team discovered an unauthorised operation at a construction site in the Akahan Adi community, near the residence of the late Ter Gboko. The site had been forcefully taken over by individuals linked to the ‘Yion Youth Association’ who were allegedly demanding unauthorised fees from developers.

Four individuals—Tersur Adekaa, Terkula Adzer, Terlumun Iorver, and Achin Terhemen—were apprehended at the scene while allegedly attempting to extort the sum of N300,000 from a construction worker. The group reportedly threatened to demolish the structure if their demands were not met.

In response, Vangeryina took decisive action by relieving the local community head of his duties, citing negligence and a failure to maintain order. He called on community members to remain vigilant and to report any form of illegal activity or extortion to the taskforce immediately.

“The administration of His Excellency, Governor l Hyacinth Alia remains committed to safeguarding the interests of the people of Benue State. We will leave no stone unturned in ridding Gboko of illegalities and protecting law-abiding citizens from exploitation,” Vangeryina stated.
