New National Chairman: Labour Party will be strong alternative in Nigeria – Lawmaker, Aguocha

The lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Obi Aguocha has said the Labour Party will be a strong and viable alternative party in Nigeria.

Aguocha stated this on Thursday after the National Executive Council Meeting of the Labour Party which led to the emergence of the former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party.

He advised members of the party and lovers of democracy in Nigeria to come together to work towards building the party to achieve the desired result.

Recall that the leaders of the Labour Party had held an emergency NEC meeting on Wednesday, following the Supreme Court judgment that set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja recognising Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

The leaders of the party, after the NEC meeting went to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission and told the electoral body to recognise Nenadi Usman as the LP chairman

“Now is the time to rebuild, to restore the hope and confidence reposed on Labour Party. To present credible, transparent, and accountable leadership. To ensure ground-up representation and administration at all levels of the party.

“To seek genuine peace and reconciliation with all aggrieved persons.

“To foster new growth into the party and strengthen and embolden the obedient movement and other support groups using the platforms of the party, ensuring that Labour Party remains the only viable and veritable alternative for our desired opposition today and our reinforced commitment to wrestle and restore positively responsive governance structures of Nigeria,” Obi Aguocha said.

Responding to the statement of the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, during the LP NEC meeting where he was commended for being “a lonely but unwavering voice” in the National Assembly, Aguocha said the statement was not just a commendation but a call for everyone to stand up for the defence of democracy and good governance.

He noted that the Labour Party has about 35 legislators in the National Assembly, expressing hope that they will all move into action very soon and do the needful in redefining the party for the better.
