LASIEC fixes July 12 for Lagos council elections

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially scheduled the state’s local council elections for July 12, 2025.

The announcement was made on Friday by Mr. Tope Ojo, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, who stated that elections will be held to fill 57 chairmanship seats and 376 councillorship positions across the state.

In the event of any inconclusive results, a re-run has been slated for July 19.

The election will cover all 20 constitutionally recognized Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), encompassing a total of 376 wards.

Ojo explained that the election date was strategically chosen to ensure a seamless transition in local governance and to prevent a leadership vacuum as the tenure of the current administration winds down.

LASIEC has formally kickstarted the electoral process with the issuance of the Notice of Election.

Political parties are expected to obtain nomination forms for their candidates directly from the commission’s headquarters.

A stakeholders’ meeting with all registered political parties has been scheduled for Tuesday, while the official Election Guidelines will be published on April 17.

Campaigns and political rallies are permitted to commence from April 18 and will run until July 9.

The submission window for nomination forms, both for substituted candidates and sole contenders will be open from June 18 to June 25.

Chairman of LASIEC, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), assured Lagosians of the commission’s unwavering commitment to delivering a transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral process.

She emphasized that a level playing field would be guaranteed for all participating political parties and candidates.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile urged all stakeholders to adhere strictly to the electoral timetable and guidelines to ensure a smooth and successful election.
