Trump extends US sanctions against Russia

US President Donald Trump has extended the national emergency and the associated sanctions against the Russian government for a further year.

A notice published in the US Federal Register confirmed the continuation of these sanctions.

The statement reiterates the decision to extend the national emergency beyond 15 April 2025, citing the persistent threat posed by Russia.

According to the statement, “The national emergency declared in Executive Order 14024… must continue in effect beyond April 15, 2025,” citing the “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security, foreign policy, and economy.

It will be recalled that the national emergency was initially declared on 15 April 2021, through Executive Order 14024, citing harmful foreign activities conducted by the Russian government.

These activities include interference in democratic elections, the use of transnational corruption, cyber-enabled attacks, and violations of international law, among others.

Meanwhile, Executive Order 14024 was issued by former US President Joe Biden in April 2021 in response to actions by the Russian government deemed hostile to the United States and its allies.
