Terrorist blockade of Torodi sparks fears over Niamey’s security

Armed terrorist groups have reportedly imposed a full blockade on Torodi, a town in southwestern Niger, raising alarm over escalating insecurity and the potential threat to the nation’s capital, Niamey.

Local sources and eyewitnesses report that insurgents have sealed off key access points, including the Niakatiré route and the Kobadjé–Torodi corridor.

In a disturbing incident, an ambulance came under direct gunfire while attempting to pass through the area.

Although it narrowly avoided destruction, one occupant sustained a gunshot wound to the arm.

“They fired directly at the ambulance. It was a close call. They’ve made it clear — no vehicle is allowed in or out of Torodi,” a resident said in an audio message currently circulating among locals. “They’re now stationed near the customs post at Kobagué, halting all movement.”

The attackers are suspected to be members of a jihadist group active in the volatile tri-border region shared by Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

Torodi’s strategic position — roughly 50 kilometers from Niamey — makes the siege particularly concerning, as it serves as a protective buffer between the capital and insurgent routes from Burkina Faso.

Local officials confirmed that the convoy of the Prefect was targeted by an improvised explosive device between Kobadjé and Torodi, further underscoring the deteriorating security situation.

Security analysts warn that if the blockade continues, it could not only sever vital supply and communication lines to Niamey but also destabilize nearby regions such as Bankilaré, intensifying the already fragile security dynamics in the Tillabéri region.
