No jail break in Borstal Training Institute Ilorin – Nigerian Correctional Service

The Nigerian Correctional Service, Kwara State Command, has dismissed reports of alleged jailbreak on Monday in Ilorin, at the Borstal Training Institute.

Reports had alleged that nine inmates escaped from the Ilorin training institute, which was described as untrue, according to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the institute, A.O.Bamigbade, on Monday.

Contrary to the reports, Media Talk Africa gathered that the jailbreak occurred at the Kwara State government owned juvenile custodial centre along Oko-Erin axis in Ilorin metropolis, which is not under the control of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The statement read in part; “The attention of the NCoS has been drawn to an online publication alleging that nine inmates escaped as jailbreak rocked Kwara Custodial facility. It is therefore imperative to make this clarification to disabuse the minds of the public.

“The facility where the purported jailbreak occurred is the juvenile custodial center owned and controlled by the Kwara State government.

“It is quite different from the Borstal Training Institute, Ilorin, which is a juvenile custodial facility within the jurisdiction of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

“The records from the Borstal Training Institute, Ilorin as at the period of this release, 20th of April, 2025 showed clearly that all inmates are intact and the facility is peaceful and calm.

“The service wishes to reiterate its commitment to the safe custody of those who are legally interned. The public is also enjoined to always seek clarifications on matters of public safety to avoid being misled,” the statement added.
