Kano Police issues fire safety alert amid heatwave

The Kano State Police Command has issued a strong public alert urging residents to adopt fire safety measures following a surge in fire incidents across the state.

The warning, released on Monday, April 21, 2025, comes amid rising temperatures and reports of fires in residential homes, commercial centers, a company, and a gas station.

According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the fire outbreaks have been attributed to extreme heat and human negligence, based on a joint assessment by the police and fire experts.

“In all instances, the Kano State Police Command, in liaison with the Federal and State Fire Services, provided emergency responses to save lives and protect property,” the statement read.

The Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, called on residents to embrace proactive measures to prevent future incidents.

The force noted the need for the public to ensure that fire extinguishers are installed in easily accessible areas at homes, offices, and business premises, adding the need for regular inspection of electrical wiring, appliances, and gas cylinders to reduce fire risks. A

Additionally, the police advised that all electrical appliances be switched off when not in use, particularly at night or before closing offices.

The public is also encouraged to develop and rehearse fire evacuation plans with household members or staff. Furthermore, any fire outbreak or suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the police or emergency services.

The Command also commended the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service for their timely intervention in recent emergencies. Their quick response, it noted, helped prevent loss of lives and minimized property damage.

The statement reaffirmed the police’s commitment to public safety and called on citizens to remain vigilant and report hazards or suspicious behavior. “Together, we can prevent fire incidents and ensure a safe environment
