A major breakthrough has been achieved in the fight against drug trafficking and explosives smuggling in Nigeria. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a commercial vehicle carrying 942 explosives along the Kaduna-Zaria expressway. The vehicle, which was traveling from Nasarawa to Zamfara, had the explosives concealed in a sack. A 30-year-old suspect, Nura Muhammad, was arrested in connection with the incident.
According to Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA, the agency’s chairman, Buba Marwa, has directed that the suspect and the exhibits be transferred to the appropriate security agency for further action. This significant seizure is a testament to the NDLEA’s intensified efforts to curb the illicit trade of explosives and drugs in the country.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives arrested five members of a syndicate led by Aminu Musa at the Dangoro market in Kano. The operatives recovered 50 blocks of skunk weighing 21.6kg from the suspects. Additionally, in Edo state, a white Toyota bus conveying assorted opioids from Onitsha to Auchi was intercepted, resulting in the recovery of 314,020 pills of tramadol, rohypnol, diazepam, and exol5, as well as 638 bottles of codeine syrup and 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection. A suspect, Dare Adeyemo, was taken into custody.
Further successes were recorded in Anambra and Niger states, where NDLEA operatives intercepted vehicles carrying large quantities of tramadol, co-codamol, and pentazocine injection. The suspects, Chinedu Eneh and Yusuf Abubakar, were arrested in connection with the seizures.
In a major coup, the NDLEA arrested a wanted drug kingpin, Dominic Chiegozie Obijiaku, after a 10-month investigation. The 52-year-old Managing Director of Ovidaq International Ltd was involved in the importation of 2,616,060 pills of tramadol 225mg, which were intercepted by the NDLEA at the Apapa seaport in Lagos. A follow-up operation at his house in Lekki led to the seizure of 51 wraps of Canadian Loud weighing 34grams.
These seizures and arrests demonstrate the NDLEA’s commitment to disrupting the supply chain of illicit drugs and explosives in Nigeria. The agency’s efforts are crucial in preventing the proliferation of these substances, which can have devastating consequences for individuals and communities.
