In a significant development, the Abuja International Conference Centre, a landmark facility in Nigeria’s capital, is set to be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure development. This announcement was made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following an inspection of the project in Abuja. The inauguration is slated to coincide with President Tinubu’s second year in office, symbolizing a commitment to revitalizing key national assets.
The Abuja International Conference Centre, originally built in 1991, had fallen into disrepair over the years, prompting President Tinubu to direct its rehabilitation and upgrade to international standards. The renovation, undertaken by Julius Berger, has transformed the facility into a world-class venue, capable of hosting international events with dignity and prestige. Minister Wike commended the contractor for the quality of work and adherence to the project timeline, underscoring the importance of effective leadership in achieving such feats.
Minister Wike emphasized that the rehabilitation of the conference centre is a prime example of “effective leadership,” highlighting the stark contrast between its previous state and its current world-class status. “No responsible leader would allow such a facility to be called an international conference centre considering the rot,” Wike noted, adding, “Today, the centre has been transformed into a world-class facility, thanks to Mr President’s leadership and support. That’s what leadership is all about.”
In addition to the conference centre, Minister Wike also inspected the ongoing extension of Obafemi Awolowo Way (N5), a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and accessibility within the capital. The project, also being executed by Julius Berger, is expected to be part of the developments inaugurated during President Tinubu’s second anniversary in office. Wike expressed optimism about the project’s progress, praising the contractor for its commitment to excellence and timelines.
