In a shocking turn of events, Olugbenga Edema, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate for the November 16, 2024, governorship election in Ondo State, has formally resigned from the party. The news comes after Edema’s resignation letter, addressed to the NNPP chairman in Mahin Ward 11, Ilaje Local Government, was made public on Sunday in Okitipupa.
According to Edema, the internal crisis within the party was a significant factor in his decision to leave. He expressed his disappointment with the party’s leadership, stating that their actions were not in line with the principles of a serious political party aiming to win elections. Edema noted that since joining the party in June 2024, it has been plagued by internal conflicts and power struggles, which have hindered its growth.
Edema, a former Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Commission (OSOPDEC), also criticized the party’s leadership for their alleged treacherous behavior. He claimed that they frustrated his efforts by withdrawing a legitimate court case in favor of an opposing party. This move, Edema said, was unprecedented in his over 35 years of active participation in politics. He emphasized that the party’s objectives seemed to be vastly different from those of a typical serious-minded political party.
In his resignation letter, dated May 9, 2025, Edema stated, “It is apparent that the objective of the party is radically different from the above stated objectives of any serious-minded political party.” He added, “From the foregoing, it is obvious that I am not on the same page with the leadership of the party as to what a party’s objectives and values should be.” Edema concluded by announcing his formal withdrawal from the NNPP, effective immediately.
Notably, Edema did not disclose which party he plans to join next. It is worth mentioning that Edema initially defected to the NNPP after losing the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Edema’s departure from the NNPP marks a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
