Lagos 2027 Governorship Race Heats Up: Multiple Contenders Emerge
The battle to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027 is gaining momentum, with various political stakeholders and groups in Lagos State already backing their preferred candidates. The race is expected to be one of the most closely watched and intensely contested in the state’s recent political history.
Among the notable contenders is Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Speaker of the House of Representatives. Gbajabiamila’s supporters point to his close ties with the President and his extensive political experience, which they believe make him a strong contender. "Gbajabiamila is not just a seasoned legislator. Now as Chief of Staff to the President, he has added executive experience. That’s the kind of leadership Lagos needs," said Famous Oloyede, an APC chieftain from Surulere.
However, some party members have expressed concerns that Gbajabiamila’s age could be a factor, as he will be 64 by 2027. "He should stay back in Abuja and continue supporting the President. Lagos needs someone younger; and besides, it’s time another administrative district takes the seat," a senior party source told Media Talk Africa.
Other contenders include Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the current Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare from Epe, who is seen as a competent and loyal figure capable of restoring Epe’s influence in Lagos politics. Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, is also being touted by political and religious circles, with a notable Islamic cleric recently expressing support for his candidacy.
Additionally, Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has been mentioned as a potential candidate, although he has not publicly declared his interest. This development has placed the party and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in a dilemma, especially given the President’s silence on the matter.
The Ikorodu district, one of Lagos State’s largest administrative districts, is also pushing for representation, with stakeholders insisting that the district is yet to be adequately represented at the top. Rep Babajimi Benson and current Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat are being considered as potential candidates, while Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa is being lobbied for the position of deputy governor if the governorship goes to another district.
Other zones, including Badagry, are also calling for a turn in the executive seat, with some party members arguing that it’s time for power to shift to overlooked districts. Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo (Tokunbo) Abiru, who represents Lagos East Senatorial District, is another name gaining traction within APC circles.
As the contest for the soul of Lagos in 2027 heats up, one thing is clear: the race will be intensely competitive, with multiple contenders vying for the top spot. With no clear frontrunner emerging yet, the outcome is far from certain, and the stakes are high for the various contenders and their supporters.
