Nigeria Arrests Wanted Criminals on INTERPOL Red List at Airports

Criminals on INTERPOL red list arrested in Nigeria - FG reveals

In a significant development, the Nigerian government has made a major breakthrough in its efforts to combat international crime. According to the Federal Government, several wanted individuals have been apprehended by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) at Nigerian airports. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a regional workshop on Maritime Border Security in Lagos.

The arrested individuals were found to be on INTERPOL’s red list, indicating that they were wanted for serious crimes. Notably, these arrests took place within a span of just two days, highlighting the effectiveness of the country’s enhanced security measures. As Minister Tunji-Ojo explained, “We’ve built a robust database, and we are reaping the fruits. In the last couple of weeks, within two days, a lot of people on the Interpol red list were arrested at our airports, preventing them from coming in.”

The minister revealed that the apprehended individuals had traveled from various countries, including Italy and Ireland. This international dimension underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in fighting crime. Nigeria’s improved security systems, particularly at its airports, have made it increasingly difficult for fugitives to enter the country undetected. As Tunji-Ojo pointed out, “They would have entered Nigeria if it were 18 years ago, but now we know that in terms of our air terminals, they are in sync because it is integrated into a central system.”

This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its security infrastructure and collaborating with international partners to combat crime. The successful arrests demonstrate the effectiveness of the country’s enhanced security measures and its determination to prevent Nigeria from being used as a haven for international fugitives. With its improved systems and collaboration with organizations like INTERPOL, Nigeria is taking a proactive stance in the global fight against crime.
