Nigeria Makes Significant Progress in Combating Security Challenges Under Tinubu Administration

What we're doing to secure Nigeria, by Nuhu Ribadu — Daily Nigerian

Nigeria has made significant strides in tackling its multi-faceted security challenges, according to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. Speaking at the APC National Summit, Ribadu stated that the Federal Government and security services have substantially contained atrocities such as mass killings, wanton destruction, and terrorist attacks on government installations. This progress is a marked improvement from the situation inherited by the Bola Tinubu administration in 2023.

Prior to 2023, Nigeria faced numerous security challenges, including Boko Haram in the North East, Armed Banditry in the North West, Secessionist agitations, Niger Delta unrest, and communal conflicts. The country witnessed devastating attacks, including the assault on the Abuja-Kadun train, Kuje Prison, a church in Owo, and an army battalion in Bwari, Abuja. These attacks resulted in the loss of over 35,000 and 12,000 lives to Boko Haram and banditry, respectively, and left millions homeless.

However, through a combined security effort, the government has made notable progress in addressing these challenges. The security agencies have worked together to substantially address issues such as the sit-at-home in the South East and sabotage of oil installations in the Niger Delta. Over 13,543 Boko Haram elements have been neutralized, and over 11,000 arms have been recovered and destroyed. Furthermore, 124,408 Boko Haram fighters and their families have surrendered to troops since the current administration took office.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended President Tinubu for his efforts in tackling security challenges, stating that internal security has been streamlined and strengthened. Akpabio noted that there are no longer cases of terrorists taking over territories and hoisting alien flags, a significant improvement from the past. The Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma, who spoke on behalf of the 22 governors of the party, acknowledged that despite the complexity of the security challenges, progress is evident.

The ongoing operations in the Tumbuktu Triangle, Tumbu islands, and other enclaves aim to completely eliminate the insurgents. While there have been some setbacks, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. The progress made in the past two years is a testament to the effectiveness of the combined security effort and the government’s determination to address the security challenges facing the country.
