Poverty now a tool of governance under Tinubu — ADC

The most significant achievement of President Bola Tinubu’s federal government is the conspicuous weaponization of poverty across all segments of society.

This was the scorecard of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as stated in a release signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary and former governorship candidate in Cross River State, Dr. Effiong Efa Nyong.

According to the statement, Tinubu’s administration has ushered in an era of hardship for the Nigerian people, describing it as a second wave of slavery, poverty weaponized.

The former broadcast journalist said that, to complement the hardship, the government has consistently increased tariffs across virtually every sector of life, including electricity, transportation, communication, healthcare, and education.

The party condemned the multiple taxation of unimaginable proportions being perpetrated by the government, saying it has now become the norm.

The ADC recalled that the weaponization of hardship began the same day Tinubu took office, with the infamous gaffe-turned-policy: the abrupt announcement of the removal of the petroleum subsidy.

The opposition party described such a hasty announcement by Tinubu as reckless, stating that the singular action heralded a new era of hardship for Nigerians, particularly targeting the youth.

Nyong lamented that in the ten years of APC rule, Nigerians have suffered “terrible hardship without any comparable development, state-sponsored intimidation, recklessness, harassment, sex scandals, judicial somersaults, and legislative compromises akin to George Orwell’s Animal Farm.”

According to the opposition party, the APC has trivialized the grave state of the nation, even coercing political figures to defect to their party.

“What happened to the promises of good governance, economic growth, and national unity? Two years into the reign of the ‘messiah,’ our economy lies in shambles, the family unit is disintegrating, ritual killings are on the rise, and repentant terrorists now help massacre our sons and daughters, both on the battlefield and at home. One thing, however, the government does consistently: it lies. Propaganda, wrapped in boldness.”
