2027: Tinubu’s early endorsement not driven by fear of opposition — Orji Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) has dismissed claims that the early endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and allied groups stems from fear of opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday, the former Abia State Governor stated that the APC, as the ruling party, remains confident in its track record and has no reason to be intimidated by any emerging opposition alliances.

“We are a ruling party. We are passionate about Nigeria. We love this country, and that is why many of us are building industries to create jobs not just depending on government.

“There’s no fear. The opposition will always criticise, and that’s their job. Our job is to deliver, and I believe the Nigerian people will appreciate President Tinubu’s work in the years ahead,” Kalu said.

Kalu, who also chairs the newly established Senate Committee on the Southeast Development Commission, Kalu revealed that the Southeast APC caucus had already endorsed Tinubu weeks earlier, even before the national declaration.

“Look at what I’m wearing,” Kalu said, referencing his attire.

“It’s tailored as an endorsement. The Southeast caucus met, chaired by Governor Hope Uzodinma and co-chaired by Governor Francis Nwifuru and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. We were the first to push for a national endorsement.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s economic reforms, Kalu praised President Tinubu’s bold decisions.

“This is the first President to end fuel subsidy and unify the exchange rate. That’s why things are tough now, because we are not used to hard work. But these are necessary sacrifices. Nigerians will see the results in two to three years,” he said.
