The Ogun State Police Command announced on Friday that it has engaged all political actors to ensure a peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections, aiming to prevent election‑related violence and fatalities in the state. This initiative follows previous incidents during the 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections, when police corporal Sunday Idoko was killed by gunmen during an attack on Independent National Electoral Commission officials in Eredo, Yewa South Local Government Area. In another case, a stray bullet claimed the life of Oluwakemi Adeoye, a mother of six, in the Ogere‑Remo area of Ikenne Local Government Area, as gunfire was exchanged between suspected political thugs and security agents during the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
Addressing concerns about the command’s readiness to prevent election‑related violence, State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Oyeyemi said that adequate measures have been implemented to ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process. He highlighted that all political actors have signed undertakings to conduct themselves peacefully during the elections, with these agreements witnessed by religious leaders and other key stakeholders, including retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Peter Ogunyanwo. Oyeyemi expressed confidence that such commitments will help avert further incidents.
