Nigerian Lawyer Calls for Flood Awareness and Preparedness After Mokwa Tragedy

A devastating flood has recently struck the Mokwa community in Nigeria, leaving a trail of destruction and loss in its wake. In response to this disaster, Mr. Ndarani, a senior lawyer and traditional title holder of Hukuncin Nupe, paid a condolences visit to the affected area, where he donated N30 million to support the victims. During his visit, Mr. Ndarani emphasized the importance of promoting public awareness and education about the risks of floods, enabling communities to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their property.

“We all have critical roles to play in guarding against or minimizing the devastating effects of floods across the country,” Mr. Ndarani stated. “This response must be part of a broader, long-term strategy that includes investment in infrastructure, capacity building, and public education.” He also stressed that the Mokwa tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders involved in disaster management, highlighting the need for a coordinated and proactive approach to disaster preparedness.

Mr. Ndarani advised the federal government to apply the provisions of Section 20 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires states to protect and improve the environment, safeguarding water, air, forests, and wildlife. He also emphasized the importance of keeping water channels open and adhering to building guidelines to prevent such disasters in the future. “Property owners and developers should desist from embarking on any form of physical development without adhering to extant building guidelines by relevant agencies,” he said.

The senior lawyer expressed his deep sorrow over the impact of the floods and prayed for the quick recovery of the affected communities. He also commended Governor Umar Bago for his efforts to drive progress and development in Niger State, which have greatly benefited its people. Mr. Ndarani’s visit and donation are a testament to the solidarity and support that the affected communities need during this challenging time.

As Nigeria grapples with the aftermath of the floods, Mr. Ndarani’s call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the effects of such disasters. By investing in infrastructure, capacity building, and public education, the country can reduce the impact of future floods and protect the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities. The international community can also learn from this experience, recognizing the need for coordinated efforts to address the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters worldwide.
