Oyo APC: Resist Desperate Politicians in Ibadan North Bye-Election

The Oyo State chapter of Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on supporters to oppose what it describes as attempts by “desperate political actors” to manipulate the upcoming bye-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, scheduled for August 16, 2025. The by-election follows the death of the constituency’s former representative, Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, who passed away in July 2023.

State party chairman Olayide Abas issued the warning during a meeting in Ibadan, the state capital, where he formally received the APC’s candidate, Adewale Olatunji, alongside local party executives. Abas accused unnamed influential figures of scheming to impose a “proxy candidate” on voters, undermining democratic processes. “We urge voters across all 12 wards in Ibadan North to reject deceptive tactics by those attempting to force a predetermined successor onto our constituency,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria’s election body, confirmed the August date for the vote, which will fill the vacancy left by Akinremi, a two-term legislator known for advocating infrastructure development in the region. The APC, which currently holds the seat, framed the election as critical to maintaining political stability. “Losing this constituency is not an option,” Abas emphasized, underscoring the party’s determination to retain its foothold in southwestern Nigeria.

Olatunji’s candidacy has drawn attention as the APC seeks to consolidate support in a region historically marked by competitive politics. While the party did not name specific rivals, its statements reflect heightened tensions ahead of the poll. Analysts note that bye-elections in Nigeria often intensify local power struggles, particularly in constituencies with substantial influence.

The APC’s appeal to voters highlights broader concerns about electoral integrity in Nigeria, where allegations of undue influence and candidate imposition occasionally mar elections. The call to resist “political scheming” also underscores the party’s strategy to frame itself as a defender of grassroots democracy amid internal and external pressures.

As campaigning begins, observers will monitor whether the APC’s rhetoric resonates in a constituency still mourning its late representative. The outcome could signal shifting allegiances in Oyo State, a key political battleground ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
