Shagari: Winner of Nigeria’s Toughest Election

Former President Shehu Shagari’s Grandson Praises Legacy, Overcoming Odds to Win Election

Nuhudin Mohammed Mahe, a stalwart of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the maternal grandson of the country’s second republic president, Shehu Shagari, has lauded his grandfather’s legacy and leadership. Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Inside Sources’, Mahe highlighted Shagari’s uphill battle to victory in the 1979 presidential election and his enduring impact on the nation.

Shehu Shagari, a man of faith and trustworthiness, assumed Nigeria’s presidency in 1979. Despite facing formidable candidates like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Waziri Ibrahim, and Aminu Kano, Shagari emerged victorious. “In the history of Nigeria, Shagari contested a very difficult election,” Mahe said, attributing his grandfather’s success to divine intervention and his upright character.

Shagari’s administration, which ended in a military coup led by Muhammadu Buhari in 1983, was not without challenges. Mahe acknowledged the struggles faced during the first global economic recession, stating, “There was a struggle to ensure that austerity measures were put in place so that the economy will be stable.” However, he refuted allegations of corruption leveled against his grandfather’s administration, noting that they were attempting to justify the military intervention.

Despite the tumultuous period, Shagari’s tenure left an indelible mark on Nigeria. Mahe praised his legacy of honesty, integrity, patriotism, and selfless service to humanity. “He performed tremendously well in various sectors of human endeavors,” Mahe noted, highlighting the enduring impact of his grandfather’s policies and initiatives.

Speaking on the aftermath of the military coup, Mahe revealed that his grandfather lost significant personal belongings and government documents during the upheaval. Despite these losses, Shagari’s image as a symbol of resilience and dignity remains etched in the minds of Nigerians.

For an international audience, the story of Shehu Shagari serves as a testament to the power of determination, faith, and integrity in overcoming adversity. His legacy continues to inspire Nigerians and offers valuable lessons on leadership and statesmanship. As the grandson’s sentiments underscore, the late president’s impact on Nigeria’s political and societal landscape is undeniable and enduring.
