PDP Expels Wayward Members in Lagos State Ahead of Congresses

The Lagos State branch of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summarily expelled some members who publicly declared support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The move, confirmed Thursday, is seen as a bid to strengthen internal unity and ensure only committed members participate in upcoming party congresses.

Segun Edwards, spokesperson for the PDP Elders Caucus and chairman of one of Lagos’ 20 local government areas, announced the expulsions following a strategic stakeholder meeting. The meeting evaluated the outcomes of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja the previous week.

The expulsions were effective immediately, based on the affected members’ open endorsement of the rival party ADC, deemed a violation of the PDP’s discipline and loyalty principles. Edwards, in his statement, asserted, “Such actions are incompatible with our values and principles. The stakeholders thus passed a motion for their immediate expulsion.”

The meeting also mandated all local government PDP chairmen to commence mobilization efforts in preparation for the forthcoming congresses. These internal elections, scheduled between September and November, will span all levels of the party structure, from local councils to the national convention.

Reaffirming their commitment to reviving the party in Lagos State, PDP elders warned against further disciplinary lapses, threatening stringent sanctions. Party sources indicate that the decision is aimed at fostering unity and ensuring only dedicated members participate in the restructuring process.

This action underscores the PDP’s commitment to consolidating internal unity and maintaining party discipline, crucial factors ahead of scheduled congresses and the broader political landscape. As Nigeria’s electoral cycle inches closer, political parties are intensifying efforts to solidify their ranks and prepare for political contests.
