The newly elected Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedu Orji—who is also the son of a former governor—has faced a setback in his political ambitions. Seeking to represent the Ikwuano‑Umuahia federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Orji was defeated in the recent election. Labour Party candidate Chief Obi Aguocha emerged victorious with 48,199 votes, while Orji received 35,196.
The election results were officially announced by returning officer Prof. Uma Oke. In addition to Aguocha and Orji, the ballot featured several other candidates: Mr. Ogbonnaya Obilor of the All Progressives Congress garnered 4,042 votes; Mr. Ogbonna Abariukwu of the All Progressive Grand Alliance obtained 2,758 votes; Mr. Obinna Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress scored 2,386 votes; and Mr. Friday Chimaobi of the Young Progressive Party received 1,013 votes. Further candidates included Patience Okorie of the New Nigeria Peoples Party with 644 votes, Mr. Christian Ibekwe Christian of the National Rescue Movement with 68 votes, and Mr. Nnamdi Ogbuagu of the Action Peoples Party, who secured 347 votes.
