A fuel tanker collision with a commercial bus in Lagos, Nigeria, left five people injured and sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures. The accident occurred Thursday at Toyota Bus Stop near Oshodi, a bustling transit hub, and unfolded close to the headquarters of The Guardian newspaper, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Preliminary investigations by the Oloto Police Division revealed that the tanker, transporting petroleum products and bearing license plate T28128LA, experienced sudden brake failure while traveling at high speed. It collided with a Volkswagen T4 bus, registered as GGE 526 YG, which was carrying multiple passengers. LASTMA’s swift response team extricated three women, two men, and the bus driver from the wreckage. One victim was transported to a hospital by a bystander, while emergency teams from the Lagos State Ambulance Service and the State Emergency Management Agency handled the remaining casualties, delivering them to medical facilities for treatment.
In a Friday statement, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the timeline of events and emphasized the agency’s rapid mobilization. The organization’s General Manager, Bakare-Oki, underscored the preventable nature of the crash, linking it to speeding and poor vehicle maintenance. “Drivers of heavy-duty vehicles must prioritize mechanical checks, particularly brake systems, to prevent such tragedies,” he stated. Bakare-Oki further urged transport operators to invest in recurrent training for drivers, stressing that prioritizing human lives should guide all road operations.
While no fatalities were reported, the incident highlights persistent challenges in Lagos’ traffic safety landscape. The city, home to over 20 million residents, has long grappled with road accidents involving commercial vehicles, often exacerbated by inadequate maintenance and regulatory enforcement.
