The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as the winner of last Saturday’s presidential election in Anambra State. The announcement was made at the INEC Collation Centre in Awka after the completion of the exercise on Tuesday. Obi secured a significant victory in the state, winning by a wide margin.

During the announcement, the Anambra State Collation Officer, Prof. Nnenna Otti, provided detailed results of the election. She reported that the total number of registered voters was 2,536,156, with 628,590 accredited voters. The total valid votes cast amounted to 613,861, while there were 10,751 void votes, leading to a total of 624,612 votes cast. Prof. Otti, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, announced these results at precisely 12:50 PM.

In her statement, Otti detailed the vote counts for each party. The results were as follows: A – 343, AA – 108, AAC – 1,012, ADC – 208, ADP – 299, APC – 5,111, APGA – 7,388, APM – 325, APD – 148, BP – 514, LP – 584,621, NNPP – 1,967, NRM – 118, PDP – 9,036, PRP – 62, SDP – 84, YPP – 1,997, and ZLP – 1,420. Notably, the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), along with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), failed to secure up to 10,000 votes in any local government area.

The closest rival to Obi was Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the PDP, who garnered 9,036 votes. The APGA presidential candidate, Prof. Peter Umeadi, received 7,388 votes, while the Young Progressive Congress secured 1,997 votes. At the time of this report, the collation officer and the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Anambra State, Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, had departed for the National Collation Centre in Abuja.
