Severe Flooding Destroys 70 Homes in Malam Madori, Jigawa State

A prolonged heavy downpour between Saturday night and Sunday morning has caused widespread destruction, demolishing about 70 houses in Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria. The devastating flooding, triggered by the heavy rainfall, also damaged numerous buildings and forced residents to flee their homes.

According to a statement released by the Information Officer of the council, Musa Muhammad, the rainwater overwhelmed waterways and culverts in the area, leading to the catastrophic flooding. “The disaster occurred after heavy rainfall that lasted many hours, and the flood overwhelmed the waterways and culverts in the area,” Muhammad explained.

Residents in affected areas, including Shagari Quarters, Tonikutara, Gandun Sarki, and Gandun Bundugoma, reported significant damage and losses. One of the victims, Umar Abba from Gandun Sarki, appealed for urgent assistance from the State Government, stating that his house was among the over 30 completely destroyed buildings.

As a result of the devastating floods, many residents were rendered homeless and are currently taking refuge with relatives. Bulama Jamilu, a local title holder, confirmed the displacement of numerous residents, saying that many were forced to seek shelter in their relatives’ homes.

The Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Salisu Sani, expressed sympathy for the victims and pledged to provide support. The Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) has been directed to assess the damage and report on the extent of the destruction. To aid in relief efforts, the lawmaker representing Malam Madori in the State House of Assembly, Hamza Adamu, has donated tippers of sand and other assistance to the affected residents.

Additionally, a water pump engine has been provided at Gandun Sarki to drain floodwaters from the area. A team led by Senior Special Adviser to Gov Umar Namadi on Community Affairs and Inclusion, Hamza Muhammad, has been deployed to assess the situation and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.

The community remains in dire need of assistance as residents strive to rebuild and recover from the devastating effects of the flooding.
