Malian Army Hit by Wide-Scale Jihadist Attack
A devastating attack by the Al Qaeda-affiliated group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) on the Malian army has left 21 soldiers dead and two others captured, a US intelligence NGO reports. The attack, which targeted military barracks and militia positions in Farabougou, Southwestern Mali, was described as a wide-scale assault.
According to the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks communications by Islamist militants, JNIM seized control of the military barracks and militia positions, as well as 15 military vehicles and over 50 weapons. Mali’s army confirmed that its outposts in Farabougou and Biriki-Wèrè were subject to simultaneous attacks early Tuesday but refused to release a casualty toll.
This latest attack is part of a surge in jihadist insurgency that has plagued Mali since May, with major attacks claimed by JNIM and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) targeting various locations across the Sahel. The terrorist groups’ activities have resulted in a significant loss of life, with the Malian army killing 80 JNIM militants in July after they launched a coordinated attack on army posts in seven towns in Western Mali.
The head of the US Africa Command, General Michael Langley, expressed concerns about the extent of Islamist groups’ reach in the region. He stated that these groups are looking to extend their presence to West Africa’s coastline, allowing them to boost their revenue through human trafficking, smuggling, and arms trading.
Experts have raised concerns about the resurgence of terrorist violence, citing JNIM and ISGS’ adaptive capabilities and questioning the efficacy of counter-terrorism strategies implemented by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The African Institute for Security Studies stated that this rise in terrorist violence underscores the need for more effective strategies to combat the threat posed by these groups.
