Ireti Kingibe, the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party for the Federal Capital Territory in the 2023 election, has been declared the winner of the FCT Senate seat. The announcement was made by the Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the FCT, Prof. Sanni Saka of the University of Abuja, on Tuesday in Abuja. Kingibe, who is married to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babagana Kingibe, secured 202,175 votes to emerge victorious.
In the election results, Philip Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came in second with 100,544 votes, while Angulu Dobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) placed third with 78,905 votes. This outcome indicates that Aduda, one of Nigeria’s longest-serving federal lawmakers, will be leaving parliament after losing to Kingibe. He previously served two terms in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011 and was elected to the Senate for the FCT in the 2011 elections on the PDP ticket.
While declaring the results, Prof. Sanni Saka stated, “I, Prof. Sanni Saka, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2023 FCT senatorial district election held on February 25. The election was contested, and the candidates received the votes as announced. Ireti Kingibe, having satisfied the requirements of the law, has been declared the winner.” He also mentioned that the issues with the Bwari results, which had been previously canceled, were resolved and certified as valid. However, the results for Abaji remain canceled due to unresolved issues. Both Suleiman Ango, the APC agent, and Abdulrahman Mohammed from the PDP refused to sign the result sheet, claiming it was not authentic.
