INEC Warns Against Multiple Voter Registrations in Sokoto State

Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Warns Against Multiple Voter Registrations, Threatens Prosecution

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the electoral process, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto State, Nigeria, has issued a warning to eligible voters against multiple registrations, emphasizing that such actions contravene the Electoral Act and may result in prosecution.

This warning was delivered by Umar Garba, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Sokoto State, during his inaugural meeting with journalists at the commission’s headquarters. Garba stated that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, with online pre-registration, seeks to enroll new voters, facilitate transfers for individuals who have relocated, and replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The physical registration phase is slated to begin on August 25, spanning all 23 local government areas, the INEC state headquarters, and designated centers. To participate, registrants must provide valid identification, including national ID cards, passports, driver’s licenses, or birth certificates.

To combat electoral malfeasance, INEC plans to deploy cutting-edge technology, including the Voter Enrollment Device and the Automatic Biometric Identification System, which can identify multiple registrations. This proactive approach is designed to sanitize the electoral process and foster confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic systems.

With the electoral commission’s aggressive push to modernize and improve voter registration processes, it aims to empower Nigerian citizens to participate in the democratic process while safeguarding the legitimacy and transparency of future elections. As voter registration exercises unfold across the country, maintaining the integrity of the electoral process will remain paramount to upholding Nigeria’s democratic principles.
