Nigeria coach Chelle demands contract payout if sacked

The Nigeria Football Federation is facing a potential financial obligation if they decide to terminate the contract of Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle. Chelle recently addressed rumors of his possible dismissal following the team’s underwhelming performance at the 2024 CHAN.

Nigeria’s home-based team suffered losses to Senegal and Sudan in their opening two fixtures, effectively eliminating them from the competition. This outcome has led to questions about Chelle’s suitability to lead the three-time African champions in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which are set to begin in two weeks.

In an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle acknowledged the speculation surrounding his position. He stated that he is aware of the possibility of being fired after a single match, citing the unpredictable nature of football. However, Chelle emphasized that if the NFF decides to terminate his contract, they must be prepared to pay the remaining balance.

The 2024 CHAN was a significant tournament for Nigeria, and the team’s early exit has raised concerns among fans and pundits. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers approaching, the NFF is under pressure to ensure the Super Eagles are well-prepared. Chelle’s comments suggest that he is confident in his position and expects the NFF to honor their contractual obligations if they choose to replace him.

The NFF has not officially commented on Chelle’s situation, leaving the future of the Super Eagles’ coaching staff uncertain. As the team prepares for the upcoming qualifiers, the federation will need to make a decision regarding Chelle’s position. If they opt to terminate his contract, they will be required to pay the outstanding amount, which could have financial implications for the organization.

The next steps for the NFF and the Super Eagles will be closely watched by football fans in Nigeria and internationally. The team’s performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers will be a key indicator of their chances of success in the tournament. With the qualifying matches set to begin soon, the NFF must make a decision regarding Chelle’s position to ensure the team is adequately prepared.
