Makinde qualified for 2027 presidential election says PDP chieftain

A prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Chief Femi Babalola, has expressed his support for Governor Seyi Makinde’s potential candidacy in the 2027 presidential election. Babalola made this statement on Tuesday in Ibadan while inspecting a project he had donated to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council.

Babalola emphasized that Makinde is eminently qualified to contest the presidency, citing his experience as governor and his potential to bring fresh ideas to the table. He noted that the PDP has a strong presence in the North, which would enable the party to compete effectively in a “South versus South” contest. Babalola also highlighted Makinde’s performance as governor, acknowledging that while he is not perfect, he has achieved notable successes.

The businessman and PDP chieftain argued that Makinde’s eight years as governor would give him a significant advantage in competing with other prominent PDP figures, such as former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, for the party’s presidential ticket. Babalola stressed that no leader can achieve 100% in governance, but Makinde has performed creditably well.

On his own political ambitions, Babalola stated that contesting the governorship position in Oyo State is not his current priority. However, he may reconsider if he is dissatisfied with the caliber of aspirants that emerge. As a loyal and consistent PDP member, Babalola emphasized that he has never defected from the party and is committed to its ideals.

The PDP, according to Babalola, remains a leading party in Nigeria since 2003, with its members often playing a crucial role in opposition parties’ electoral successes. His comments come as the party prepares for the 2027 presidential election, with various aspirants expected to emerge in the coming months. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Babalola’s endorsement of Makinde’s potential candidacy is likely to generate significant interest and debate within the PDP and beyond.
