Nigeria Train Derailment: 618 Evacuated After Abuja-Kaduna Accident

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has reported that 618 individuals have been evacuated from the derailed Abuja-Kaduna Train Service. According to the corporation’s Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the train derailed at approximately 11:09 a.m. between Kubwa station and Asham station, specifically at KM 49.

A total of 618 persons, comprising 583 passengers, 15 crew members, one medical personnel, eight cleaners, and 11 catering staff, were successfully evacuated from the train. Among those evacuated, seven passengers sustained injuries and were immediately transported to hospital facilities by medical personnel who were mobilized to the site.

The remaining passengers were safely conveyed back to Idu and Kubwa stations aboard a rescue train dispatched from Idu. All passengers have since returned safely to their destinations. In line with the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s commitment to passenger welfare, its third-party ticketing company has been directed to issue refunds to all passengers onboard the affected train.

The incident has prompted an investigation, which is being supervised by relevant authorities, including the Federal Ministry of Transport. As a result, all Abuja-Kaduna Train Services have been temporarily suspended pending recovery of the site, further clearance, and official announcement of service resumption.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has apologized for the inconvenience caused and expressed gratitude to passengers and the general public for their understanding. The temporary suspension of services is expected to impact commuters who rely on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service for transportation. The corporation’s swift response to the incident and efforts to ensure passenger safety are notable. As the investigation into the incident continues, the Nigerian Railway Corporation will likely face scrutiny over the safety and maintenance of its trains.
