Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the efforts of China and India to help resolve the Ukraine conflict while speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin. He said Moscow values the proposals put forward by Beijing, New Delhi and other strategic partners aimed at ending the hostilities in Ukraine.
Putin also announced that he would brief SCO leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the outcome of his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska on August 15. The meeting, intended to settle the Ukraine conflict, did not produce a ceasefire or a formal peace deal, but both leaders described it as extremely productive. Putin stressed that any lasting peace must address the root causes of the crisis and restore a fair security balance. He blamed Western attempts to draw Ukraine into NATO as a major factor behind the conflict, viewing it as a direct threat to Russia’s security.
Since the Alaska talks, the U.S. president has shifted focus from an immediate ceasefire to a broader peace agreement, indicating that Ukraine is unlikely to join NATO or regain Crimea, which Russia annexed after a 2014 referendum. Putin’s comments come as the international community continues to seek a resolution to the ongoing war. The SCO summit provides a platform for leaders to discuss regional and global issues, including security and cooperation, and Putin’s briefing to SCO members is expected to shed light on the negotiations and possible next steps toward peace.
The Ukraine conflict remains a major point of contention between Russia and the West, with both sides accusing each other of escalating tensions. International bodies such as the SCO are calling for a peaceful resolution and playing a key role in promoting dialogue. As the situation unfolds, leaders like Putin, Xi and Modi are expected to influence the region’s future and help secure a lasting peace in Ukraine.
