Tanzania is conducting a nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign to combat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as schistosomiasis and soil‑transmitted helminths (STH). Led by the Ministry of Health, the program aims to treat millions of people—especially children—who are at risk of these parasitic infections. Schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and STH are major public‑health concerns in sub‑Saharan Africa, causing serious illness, long‑term complications and reduced quality of life.

In the Kibaha District, children at Vikuruti Primary School receive praziquantel and albendazole, the standard medicines for schistosomiasis and STH. Dosages are determined by each child’s height, ensuring the correct amount of medication and minimizing side effects. Dr. Antony Golinja of Tanzania’s National Neglected Tropical Diseases Control Program (NTDCP) explains that the MDA is carried out in an orderly fashion, usually within one to two hours after the children have eaten. After treatment, surveys are conducted to assess coverage and measure disease burden.

School‑based preventive chemotherapy has proven effective in targeting high‑risk populations. Children are particularly vulnerable because of frequent contact with contaminated water during bathing, play and domestic chores, which can lead to chronic infections that impair growth, cognitive development and school performance. By treating children in schools, the MDA program reduces the overall NTD burden and improves health outcomes.

The World Health Organization recommends widespread preventive treatment with praziquantel, often combined with albendazole for STH. Tanzania’s NTDCP collaborates with local and international partners to deliver mass drug administration, enhance water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, and raise community awareness. The WHO’s 2030 goal is to eradicate schistosomiasis and STH as part of its broader aim to eliminate NTDs.

Tanzania’s MDA program has already led to significant declines in infection rates across many districts, resulting in fewer illnesses, better school attendance and improved academic performance among children. As the country works toward the 2030 elimination target, the MDA initiative will remain a critical component in controlling NTDs and enhancing the health and well‑being of Tanzanians.
